About Us
The Lawrence Douglas County Bioscience Authority’s (“LDCBA”) mission is to foster the development and growth of the life sciences industry in the City of Lawrence and Douglas County, Kansas. The LDCBA, formed in 2006, is a not-for-profit corporation whose stockholders include the City of Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas, the University of Kansas (“KU) and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.
Objectives. The LDCBA’s main objectives are to help:
- Grow and diversify the local economy
- Create high-quality, high-paying jobs
- Increase the local tax base
- Stimulate the creation of wealth in the community
Strategies. The LDCBA will accomplish its objectives by implementing the following strategies:
- Develop industry resources by providing an infrastructure of professional talent, modern facilities, specialized equipment and capital around targeted core competencies currently emerging at the University of Kansas and in the private sector
- Create an industry climate that encourages, supports, and sustains the growth of bioscience firms and the commercialization of university research in Lawrence and Douglas County
- Implement a business attraction plan to grow a critical mass of life sciences firms by raising the profile of the community and recruiting outside firms, talent, and capital
Target Market. The Lawrence community, and it’s proximity to Kansas City (30 miles to the east), is an attractive location for life sciences companies because it offers a strong life sciences research base, low operating costs, a supply of qualified life sciences employees from the University of Kansas and an attractive quality of life. The LDCBA will assist companies operating in the following markets, regardless of whether they are based locally or recruited to the community:
- Pharmaceutical discovery, development, and delivery
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing
- Medical devices
- Biomaterials
- Analytical instrumentation
- Medical information technologies
- Biofuels
